April 10, 2018 — The Volvo Car Open, staged at the Family Circle Cup Stadium and site, has come and gone. However, as at all of the 45 years this prestigious tournament has operated, history was made. Kiki Bertens became the first woman from the Netherlands to win the women’s singles title. She was far and away from the stronger player, both mentally and game-wise, the entire week. Her love of clay, red and green, buoyed her performance as if it intuitively guided her to the title. She played through injury, cool weather, and the uncommon demand on players to compete in more than one match in a day — especially the most difficult: semifinal and final.
